Short Block Charlie, based in Phoenix, Arizona, has been using one of Vixen’s Aquablast 915 wet abrasive blasting cabinets for over a year and is still seeing amazing results.
Short Block Charlie is one of the premier Harley-Davidson machine shops in the USA, where they specialize in performance head modifications and engine building. Vapor blast cleaning is offered as a general service where prices can vary between $20 for a single cylinder and $75 for a triple/four crank case set. Cylinder head services and performance head packages are also available.
Prior to using the Aquablast, Charlie Lawlor, the owner of Short Block Charlie, used a soda blaster but was very disappointed with the finished results. After further consultation with Rick, he realised wet blasting was a better option for his particular application.
Manually operated, the Aquablast 915 is particularly effective for creating a satin finish on stainless steel along with a wide range of other metals. The Aquablast range is designed to simultaneously blast and degrease components in a quick and easy dust-free process, which achieves outstanding finishing results on a variety of components.
The key to Vixen’s wetblasting process is that the finish is produced through flow of water borne abrasive and not by media impact. This helps to create a finer finish due to the lubrication and flushing action of the water during the process. At Short Block Charlie, all cylinder heads are vapor blasted before machine work is implemented. We offer vapor blasting to the motorcycle industry and it is always interesting to have a customer pick up their parts when we are finished working on them. The first comment is that it looks better than new due to the amazing finish which is created by the Aquablast. Because of this we were able to raise our prices!
In our machine we use a mild glass bead abrasive which was recommended by Rick to gain the perfect finish on our components.
It took time to promote our service, but now we have raised the bar to be the industry standard thanks to the Aquablast.
